Tips and Tricks: January

A fish eye view from the ocean floor

Here’s a new Tips and Tricks video for you to brighten up your day.

This is an experiment that came out of nowhere, I was thinking about my ‘Under the Sea’ theme and remembering what sparked it all off, a trip to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth early in 2023. I spent ages sitting in front of one of the tanks, marvelling at the huge array of fish swimming before me and looking up into the tank to see if I could see the surface of it. As I am never likely to go diving, I thought this was probably as close to the feeling as I would get, seeing the light ripple on the surface and watching all the fish swimming above me.

Gouache seemed the perfect medium for this as I didn’t know where I was going with it and needed to be able to layer up the colour without it showing through the previous application.

I do hope you enjoy the video and let me know how you have got on with painting a similar subject, either by commenting below or by tagging @aliboardartist on social media.

Please note, there is no audio for this video, just lovely relaxing music for you to enjoy.

See you soon, Ali
